I'm in the process of making new maps, which has led me to this thought...

I want us to be able to go fishing again, plus mining for ore/crystals, botany, cutting down trees, digging for things, etc. Sounds daunting, but in actuality, all of these actions are the same fundamental thing:

- Search stage (i.e. cast fishing line, start using pickaxe)
- Retrieval stage (i.e. reel line in, pick up ore)

There's an actual waiting period of a few seconds for each action, so it's not just clicking at breakneck speed. The timeframes can be improved as you improve your skill at the given profession.

Each profession will require one or more special items to be equipped. For instance, a fishing rod, or a pickaxe, gardening gloves, shovel, axe.

Each profession will have a skill level a**ociated with it, which you increase by partaking in the profession. The higher the level, the better chance of catching fish, and the more likely you'll get more valuable fish, etc.

A series of special map actions are being added which are resource nodes. One for each type of resource. There's a personal throttle on the amount of ore/fish that can be taken from that location, and it will vary, to force you to move around a bit. There's also a global throttle, so if a place becomes too popular, it'll dry up for a while. Just to keep things interesting.

I think the real trouble will be taking this feature and having a good collection of core "resource" items: a few metal ores, wood, plants, etc., which can be used for crafting other things.

For now, at least the fish will be edible raw, so no crafting required initially

In terms of an ETA, I've done most of the backend stuff now, but there's at least a good week left in it before I have a basic working demo.

The plan is to make it possible to tag items as usable for professions, and there may be some secondary items/skills that improve chances such as fishing lures. Also, I doubt I'm going to make this an attribute per se, but some sort of grading system (basic fishing rod, good fishing rod, etc... probably need to think more about the naming convention there..)

Edit:
I want to keep this as simple as possible, but if anyone has any feedback/suggestions, let me know. Especially with regards to how to do the profession skill progression stuff. I envisaged a few levels, perhaps 10 per profession, and some "experience" gained by using each profession which bumps you up to max.

The skill could even decay slowly through inaction, but that might get annoying. Open to all thoughts on this stuff.

I've been keeping a fishing rod and pickaxe in Vault storage for just such an occasion!

I'm mostly fine with the game as it is and would love these features. There are many long time members that've been asking for years for you to fix other elements of the game. If you start this before addressing those items, you risk alienating loyal members.

The only parts of the game I'm prepared to focus on in the near term are maps, quest, and items. Everything else can wait imho.

Screenshot the following.

I agree.

All the players we have had & those that are still here didnt join to go mining etc (plenty of other games out there with the basic gameplay sorted do this already)

The old forum was full of what everyone wanted/wanted fixed & they will be the easiest to get back (they are already in the dbase).
