I see that you plan this again. But I think you are right that the avatars aren't under your control. If anything, you could bring back what we used to have at the bottom of the screen in some way. It showed recent online players, ordered by account age, and showed level, etc.

Tempted to show the top 5 players on the player home page though (the logged-in one). In theory it should always be people that have invested some time into the game and aren't about to post goatse pics as their avatar (and lose their account(smiley))

Exactly. I have the game open almost constantly and there are enough high levelled regular players that it shouldn't cause any issues. It was always a nice feature. Gave you something to aspire to!

This is entirely true, and one of the many reasons I leveled as hard as I did at the start. Top 5 so you'd always be up there. Hall of Fame as well, but unfortunately when I was actually achieving things, HoF still never got used lol.
Leveling and player attacking has gone off the rails these days though, it's crazy. Player made maps, then the raise to NPC level cap helped a lot... When I think of how much I played this game and how often I would attack, or the time I did 200k attacks in a month... it was killing me.

The attack timer is what literally keeps everyone capped at a minimum amount of time to get to a certain level. If someone's minimum time to attack is 3 seconds (or whatever it is), a player can literally calculate the time commitment it would take to be top 5.

Off-topic, but I still consider this timer a constraint that will always hinder activity for players and the appeal to the game for new-comers.

The argument from top players will likely always be "well I had to deal with this to get to where I am, so why shouldn't they", but I think that's a defeatist mindset that will keep the game from being actively played.

It's only 2 seconds at the moment. It serves two purposes:

1. Stops a bot from doing 600 attacks per second.
2. Stops players with 1Gb lines from having a ma**ive advantage over people on 2Mb.

Really, it's 1. that's the big deal. The latter hasn't really been a problem for a few years now imho. If anything, it's more ping-constrained now.

I can't just remove it. I need rate limiting there or it'll get silly every time someone tries their hand at gaming the system.

Can I just ask, how often are people really getting this? Is it because I'm an Atlantic ocean away, or am I just terrible at attacking, because I so rarely manage to trigger it (smiley)

I'm open to the possibility of modifying it to make it less annoying for people though.

I get it quite frequently when I attack. I’m better at judging when to click the button the more “in practice” I am, but unless I’m doing thousands of attacks a day I get it often enough to be quite frustrating.

I understand the need to have some limit, so things don’t get too crazy, but lowering it a bit would be fantastic. Also, possibly making the attack icons unclickable until you are able to attack. a**uming that doesn’t slow things down too much and the timer for that doesn’t glitch. I swear, sometimes the button on the attack player pages likes to mess with me and stay unclickable for longer than it should.

All the time is an understatement. I have to literally count "1, 2" in my head to stop myself from clicking too soon.

If the purpose is to avoid bots, then even a 0.5 second hold is the answer so that any auto-attacker has a constraint. For a player playing normally, it should be at a pace where they never see this message because they are attacking at a "human" pace.
