I've been looking at skills again, as part of a change I'm making to character types. I should have done this a long time ago, but I never quite manage it (smiley)

This must be the 10th attempt now. If I get anywhere with it, I'll post the details here!

It's part of a plan to remove the character type field from the registration form, and put it on a separate page, with more details about the background, pros & cons of each character type.

There will need to be race-specific skills, along with some categories of shared skills. The foundations are already there for learning skills as you play -- that is, literally getting more skills appearing on your skills page to unlock.

The skill system is mostly for active buffs (which expire), but it's also possible to have pa**ive skills, which are nearly indefinite, and instant skills, which apply a single effect and start cooling down immediately after.

Long term, I wouldn't mind seeing actual skill trees, but for now, the category/list structure will more than suffice.

In the future, this might be a reasonable place to implement other skill-like features, such as weapon skill. We could have them trainable using skill points, or some other measure, such as usage of a particular weapon cla**. Skill points would be more consistent though.

Edit: The other thing is, we currently have no dependency system. It might be nice if you couldn't unlock skill C until skill A  or B is unlocked, etc. Again, this is more fitting with a tree layout.

We have a huge list of possible effects now, and I'm currently trying to split them between the various categories and character types (for race-specific skills).

This could be great to look into! Skills need a refresh anyway since hitting about 150 unlocks everything and you're just stockpiling points from there.

Old players might need a free re-choice though, to pick what they prefer. With further re-spec costing a set amount of points.

Rather than being able to choose all types of skills, you could have cla**es of skills.

For example: PVP-specific; Explore-specific; Raid-specific

This way you choose a "path" for your character that you like best and those are the only skills you can master.

Examples would be increased exp, cash, stats on the path you choose (PVP, world attacks, raid bosses) as well as some other cla**-specific skills (example for explore-specific: You do not lose exp when you lose a battle. Example for PVP-specific: Players can't attack you for 'x' hours. Example for Raid-specific: Get a 50% chance of a double-attack).

Well there is the huge list of skill idea's here: https://www.futurerp.net/pages/board_thread.php?id=3415
I don't know if you looked at these at all or not, so just postin' them.
Which reminded me of that whole mega-thread thing so I made a reply there as well. I might work on updating that a bit. It shouldn't be too hard, since I can just look at the creation/post time of recent threads. But I'm sure I'm going to miss some things since it's been such a long time and I didn't keep up with the threads.

I feel like I recall a lot more than this though, skills and races. But if it isn't in the megathread currently then it probably never got posted to the forum or I missed it. It's quite possible it was only talked about in the Chat Room though... sooooo many things were brainstormed in there and it's a shame that they weren't saved, or at least talked about in a thread instead lol.

Something I was thinking though after going through some of my guild forum posts would be some sort of pet for the players. You could keep the races the same, but add a pet feature. These could possibly gain a % of the exp that you gain from everything you do (as an additive % to not take away from you). Their skills would provide buffs to your player, and help in attacking as well, great for PvP and possibly raiding. A skill to increase their chance to help, etc.. I'm not sure how daunting of a task this would be though. But not only would this potentially bring players back because of new content, it would give them a reason to attack even at the highest player levels so that they can level their pets and their skills. Which in turn gives them a compounded reason to level higher, which is to gain more exp per attack. As well as raid more often and be active within their guild and the community.
Obviously they'd have to fit the theme. So a marine, or space alien, etc., possibly gaining armor over time as they level or something.
